Subject Matter: History of Ancient Civilizations

Grade Level: 6th Grade

Lesson Objective:

Learners will demonstrate knowledge of ancient Egyptian art and architecture by locating the correct information through the various websites provided and answering the scavenger hunt questions below. Students will also be evaluated on their ability to accurately locate information through the internet and apply that information to the questions asked. 

Subject Matter Content Standard:

6.2 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Kush.

5. Discuss the main features of Egyptian art and architecture.
Background
We will be examining the art and architecture types throughout ancient Egypt’s dynastic periods from 3000 B.C. to 30 B.C. We will explore websites that will take us further into the Early Dynastic Period (3000- 2650 B.C.), The Old Kingdom (2650-2150 B.C.), The Middle Kingdom (2040-1640 B.C.), The New Kingdom (1550- 1070 B.C.), the Late Periods (712-332 B.C.), and the Ptolemaic Period (332-30 B.C.). We will examine the art and architecture types of the wall carvings and paintings, hieroglyphics, great pyramids, pottery and sculptures, tombs and temples, and their importance to the History of Ancient Civilizations.

1. What was the main purpose of creating such detailed and beautiful artworks and architecture structures in ancient Egypt?

2. What tools did the ancient Egyptians use to construct their great pyramids?
3. What were the two parts of the ancient tombs called, and what were their purposes?
4. What is the hidden symbolism in ancient statues and monuments? What does it all mean?
5. The Egyptians were one of the first to make pottery. What was the purpose of this and how did they do it?
6. The Egyptians believed heavily in the afterlife. What was painted inside the temple walls to help those passing over to the afterlife?
7. What was the purpose of creating the great pyramids?
8. What are hieroglyphics and what were they used for? Do they exist today?

Assessment:   

Students will be able to locate and learn about new information pertaining to the ancient Egyptian study unit through access to new websites on the internet. Completing the series of questions shows that the student demonstrates comprehension with computer website information retrieval and being able to create quality work from that information. Observation of active student participation is also assessed based on their timeliness to complete their task. The student will copy and paste the questions from the web scavenger hunt blog into a Word document, and complete the questions through the computer software program. The student’s work will be saved in his or her individual online portfolio for later review.
